Part 4 - Wetlands Against Climate Change: "Keeping it Clean: Wetlands Purifying Water!"


In Canada we expect access to safe and reliable drinking water, and per person, Canada has the world’s largest supply of freshwater. Newfoundland and Labrador is no exception with an abundance of ponds, lakes, rivers and wetlands. However, when we take a look worldwide, climate change is threatening our access to clean water.

The World Health Organization (WHO) in partnership with UNICEF, reported in 2010 that 884 million people did not have access to clean drinking water. At that time, the United Nations made access to clean water a human right. This human right is being threatened in some surprising ways due to climate change.

First, climate change can effect our water quality. Extreme weather events can stir up silt and increase runoff and warmer temperature can cause the over production of biological and chemical elements. For example storm sewers can be overwhelmed by heavy rain and flash floods, leading to untreated water entering our drinking water supplies. 

Also the way we produce clean water impacts climate change. When water is treated in plants that use large amounts of energy, which in many cases are powered by coal, natural gas, oil and other fossil fuels this contributes to greenhouse gas emissions. Also, the demand for clean water has increased the use of bottled water. As more bottles are manufactured and shipped around the world this also contributes to greenhouse gases emissions. Coming at us from different angles, climate change impacts our clean water on the global scale.

Wetlands can help! Believe it or not, natural wetlands have the power to clean water! They offset the production of greenhouse gases by doing what they do naturally, purifying water in our environment. The process begins when flowing water meets a wetland. This water can be from rivers, lakes, sewage or agricultural runoff. Once the water meets the wetland it moves very slowly because the thick vegetation, the absorbent peat soils, and the network of roots are able to hold water in the wetland for an extended period of time. This allows for physical, chemical, and biological processes to clean the water.

Physical processes in wetland habitats include the trapping sediment and excess minerals. After a heavy rain fall or extreme weather event, such as a hurricane or flooding, sediment can be stirred up. These heavy sediments can clog our waterways and treatment plants, kill fish, and smother bottom feeding wildlife and plants.When these sediment heavy waters pass through a wetland, the habitat acts like a sieve, allowing sediment to settle at the bottom before it reaches water supplies and wildlife habitat. According to the Ecological Society of America, wetlands can trap and retain 80 – 90% of sediment from runoff!

Besides silt and sediment, wetlands also help remove potentially harmful elements. Phosphorus is a naturally occurring element that is essential for life, but in excess it can lead to kidney disease. Excess phosphorous can end up in water supplies though over fertilization of agricultural crops. In its particulate (or solid) form, it is first removed by the wetland using the physical processes of sedimentation. Once this particulate phosphorous settles out in the slow moving, highly vegetated water of wetlands, chemical processes remove even more phosphorus. Dissolved phosphorus, in the form of liquids and gases, accumulate, react with the wetland sediments, and eventually precipitates (solidifies) into other harmless elements including aluminum, iron and calcium phosphorus.

Wetlands also use biological processes to filter excess elements and pollution from water. Plants, algae and bacteria uptake and transform chemical elements that in excess, are considered pollutants. Like phosphorus, high nitrogen levels are also present in areas where heavy fertilizer is used. Ammonia, which is in many fertilizers, converts to nitrates when exposed to water and high levels of nitrates can cause many problems including methemoglobinemia (blue baby syndrome) that inhibits the flow of oxygen in the bloodstream of infantsNitrogen removal in wetlands is a naturally occurring process. Microbes found on plant roots and stems, take up nitrogen and convert it into harmless nitrogen gas and release it into the air. Wetlands are able to eliminate 70 –90% of entering nitrogen through this process.

Wetlands have proven so effective at purifying water, companies around the world are constructing wetlands to clean municipal waste water. Constructed wetlands are a system of wetland beds that can mimic some of the filtration power of natural systems. Several municipalities in Newfoundland have opted for constructed wetland systems including Marystown, Appleton, and Stephenville. Wastewater is first passed through a screen to remove large non-organic materials, then the water passes through several wetland beds where it is filtered and able to return to the natural environment in lakes and rivers. Any settled materials are collected and sent through an additional wetland beds where the native plants re-mineralize the sediments and create compost that can be used for landscaping.

Constructed wetlands can be appropriate for small communities, but do not replace natural wetlands and do not always provide the many other services provided by natural wetlands such as flood control, carbon sequestration and wildlife habitat.

We are learning more about wetlands, their power as natural water filters, and the many other ecosystems services they provide in the face of climate change.  Unfortunately, in Canada we lose 80 acres (32 hectares) of wetland per day. Conserving wetlands, and better understanding their functions, can assist us in keeping water clean by mitigating the effects of climate change.


What can YOU do to conserve wetlands that purify our water?

1) Use natural fertilizers on our home gardens

2) Take your fertilizers, pesticides, oil and other toxic wastes to the Household Hazardous Waste disposal station nearest you


3) Plant native vegetation on your property and in wetland restoration projects (Click to find our link on how to enhance your backyard habitat)


4) Volunteer to monitor and clean municipal and urban waterways – organizations like NA ACAP
, Municipalities, and WWF regularly host cleanups where you can do your part!

5) Conserve and protect natural wetlands in our municipalities by supporting parks and organizations committed to protecting wetlands and natural areas


6) Support proper municipal planning that considers impacts on waterways as part of all urban, industry and agricultural development. Attend your local public consultations whenever your municipality asks, and share your concerns about wetlands and waterways being conserved for the future

SAM Newsletter #15 Spring 2018

Spring into Outreach: Making Connections  

In March and April, SAM Staff have been working out of the office, making connections with residents, Councillors, environmental non-profit groups, and partners. Here are some of the highlights of our Spring Outreach!

March 1st - SAM spoke at the Aquatic Habitat Restoration Workshop about SAM restoration projects happening in Bonavista and Bay Roberts/Spaniards Bay. This workshop was led by ACAP Humber Arm and theWorld Wildlife Fund as a part of their habitat restoration work in the province.

March 10th and April 21st - SAM participated in both the Forested Wetland Conference, and the Atlantic Society of Fish and Wildlife Biologists conference in Nova Scotia. SAM presented our Municipal Habitat Stewardship Program to other biologists in the Atlantic provinces with lots of great feedback!

March 22nd -  Was World Water Day and SAM partnered with Ducks Unlimited Canada at the Marine Institute World Water Day Event (MI). This free event had many MI students attend, and present their own projects that are helping protect water in our province and around the globe.

March 24th - SAM put "Nature" back into Easter, at the Portugal Cove St. Phillip's Easter Party with our "Arctic Hare Hop" and 3D printed egg game. Families gathered at the Voisey's Brook SAM Management Unit and enjoyed the trails while they searched for chocolate eggs and hopped like hares!

April 5th - SAM hosted Storytime at the Torbay Public Library. There are lots of ways to learn about wetlands, even when the weather is bad, just pick up a book! Click here for SAM's Wetland Reading List.

April 8th - SAM kicked off National Wildlife Week by presenting at theSalmonier Nature Park Speaker Series (see photo). Keep up to date on the series by following the Salmonier Nature park Facebook page or  by calling 229-7888

And finally SAM Spring Outreach culminated at the end of the month with not one, but TWO Earth Day Celebrations! SAM again partnered with 
Ducks Unlimited Atlantic Canada at the events, the first in Portugal Cove St. Phillip's and the second in St. John's...

April 21st Portugal Cove - St. Phillip's  hosted their Third Annual Environment Fair on April 21. Over 330 people attended the fair that was hosted by the PCSP Committee on the Environment. SAM was given the opportunity to do a feature presentation, in which we talked about the 5 types of wetlands (see our SAM Blog Series!) and built a "Wetland in a Pan" that helped demonstrate important wetland functions.  

April 22nd - Earth Day was celebrated at the Fluvarium , in St. John's, with over 340 participants. The event inspired many young families, students, and adults to do their part to protect the environment. This year The Fluvarium partnered with the Newfoundland and Labrador Environmental Network (NLEN) and really got into the spirit of "Consume Less, Play More" with their Pop-Up playground, Mend-It Cafe, and over 20 Idea Booths set up by like minded environmental organizations.

Earth Day is an annual event celebrated on April 22 each year. Events take place worldwide to demonstrate support for environmental conservation. The first Earth Day took place in 1970 in colleges, universities, primary and secondary schools across the United States. In 1980, Canada celebrated its first Earth Day and since then the day has spawned many celebrations across the country, and in our own province.

Stewardship Spotlight - Stephenville Crossing: 2018 AGM Host Town
Hosting this years AGM is the Town of Stephenville Crossing. The Town joined SAM in 1995 and has protected over 3930 acres within its municipal boundaries. The area is touted as the "Jewel of Newfoundland's Wetlands" and we can't find any reason to disagree!

The St. Georges Management Unit, is made up of 4  areas including Nardines Pond, Little River, Main Gut, and the Estuary of Harry's River plus a portion of St. George's Estuary.The Harry's River Estuary has been highlighted as one of the richest areas for waterfowl in the province. 

Flora and Fauna alike find a home in these beautiful wetlands. In 2013 the Natural History Society NL cited 198 species of birds are found within "the Crossing", including the Piping Plover, a species at risk.

There are also 13 plant species that are considered extremely rare found in the St. George's Management Unit. Extremely rare means they occur in less than 5 localities in the province.

Part 3 Wetlands Against Climate Change! Hold Back the Gates: Wetlands mitigate flooding

Long term weather patterns have been altered because of climate change, and more frequently include extreme weather events (see table below for some examples of altered weather patterns). According to a study published in Nature in 2015, climate change can be held responsible for three out of four temperature extremes, and almost 1/5 of heavy precipitation events globally. The study also states that on average the globe will experience 60% more extreme weather events. Heavy rains will be longer in duration, as more water evaporates due to the increase in global temperatures.

Wetlands help mitigate these extreme weather events in a few different ways, including controlling flood waters, purifying polluted water, and moderating drought. In this edition of Wetlands against Climate Change, we are going to look at how wetlands can “hold back the gates” and help mitigate flooding.

Wetlands are often compared to a sponge, because of their water-absorbing and holding abilities. For example peatlands have thick peaty soils, intricate mats of sphagnum moss and the roots of the peatland vegetation layer, that are able to absorb rainfall and snow-melt at amazing rates. According to a study done by Hallock et al in 2015 a 1 acre wetland that is 30 cm can hold 1.2 million liters of water. Once fully saturated, wetlands reduce the speed and volume of the water that enters the watershed.  The water is forced to slowly percolate through the peaty soils and web of moss and roots. This allows water levels downstream to rise and fall slowly, so the whole system can adjust to the influx of excess water. Even relatively small wetlands can help protect large watersheds. According to a study done by Godschalk et al in 1999 a 2.3 hectare wetland can retain the natural runoff from a 166 hectare watershed!

Wetlands do an incredible job of holding floodwaters, and they do it for free! This is just one of the many ecosystem services that wetlands provide. Researchers at the University of Waterloo, using computer simulations, found that leaving wetlands intact can reduce the financial costs of flooding by up to 29% in rural settings and up to 38% in urban settings. For example, at the urban study site, the average cost of flood damages if wetlands are maintained in their natural state would be $84.5 million, compared to $135 million if the wetland is replaced with agricultural development, resulting in a 38% cost increase. In the same study, if the wetland is replaced with urban development consisting of largely impermeable surfaces such as buildings, roads, sidewalks and parking lots, the cost savings of keeping the wetland intact is even higher.

If you add the other free ecosystem services provided by wetlands, including habitat protection, increased biodiversity, water purification, drought mitigation and carbon sequestration, it seems like a no brainer… wetlands save money and are an important part of Canadians self-identity.

Unfortunately, wetlands around the world have been part of a vanishing act. It is estimated that in the last 100 years 64% of the world’s wetlands have been destroyed through agriculture, dams, infrastructure and an increase in pollution. In agricultural practices, wetlands are ditched and drained in order to support crop growth. Draining has a negative impact on a wetland’s ability to mitigate flooding, and can lead to an 350% water flow increase during large flood events. As a result of wetland loss, floods caused by extreme weather events are more likely to cause damage in the form of soil erosion, property damage, loss of wildlife habitat, and loss of human life.

With the pressure of climate change it is more important than ever to keep natural wetlands intact. Members of SAM communities, have taken the first step in acknowledging the importance of protecting natural habitat within municipal boundaries. Many of our Management Units, protected under Municipal Habitat Stewardship Agreement, are part of larger watersheds that help mitigate flooding. To advocate for wetlands in your community you can:

1) Report activities in conservation areas that can harm wetlands like ditching or draining

2) Advocate for careful town planning that keep natural wetlands intact

3) Plant local and native plant species in your gardens and in your community

4) Avoid damaging wetlands on private property by keeping them an intact part of the larger system

5) Spread the word through outreach and education that wetlands are important to your community!

World Wetlands Day 2018:
Wetland Classification and Policy in NL

On February 2nd SAM partnered with the Biology Graduate Student Union (BGSA) and Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) to host a World Wetlands Day discussion panel entitled "Wetland Classification and Policy in Newfoundland and Labrador".

World Wetlands Day is celebrated every year on February 2nd and it marks the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands in 1971. The Convention, called the Ramsar Convention, is an intergovernmental treaty that "provides the framework for national action and international cooperation for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources".  This years theme was "Urban Wetlands making Cities Livable".

Wetlands of global significance are designated Ramsar sites and protected under the Ramsar Convention. There are actually 37 Ramsar sites in Canada, and one in the province, The Grand Codroy Estuary.

The afternoon started off with SAM and DUC talking about their role in wetland conservation and advocating for policy in the province. Dr. Salehi from C-Core and the Department of Applied Science and Engineering, then introduced his lab's work in creating an algorithm that will help predict wetland occurrence on the landscape using satellite imagery. Dr. Wiersma from the Department of Biology in the Faculty of Science also spoke about her lab's work, on forested wetlands, lichens and mapping on a local scale. There was a lively discussion about forested wetlands, local wetland groups in the city of St. John's, and how a provincial wetland policy will support municipalities in conserving habitat against the pressure of development. The conversation continued after the presentations with a social mixer planned by the BGSA.

The Town of Hawke's Bay joined SAM in 2008 and has protected over 1600 acres within its municipal boundaries. The area has a high diversity of wildlife and waterfowl. Boasting both rich saltwater estuaries and freshwater wetlands, these areas have many species of waterfowl, songbirds, mammals, and fish. A popular destination for anglers, Hawke's Bay also has two natural attractions, The Torrent River Nature Park and the John Hogan Trail Boardwalk. 
Congratulations on 10 years of Stewardship and thank you for making the preservation of our natural heritage a key part of life in Hawke's Bay! Here is to many more years of Stewardship!

Community Outreach Events Spring 2018

We are on the move this spring attending 3 Community Outreach events in St. John's and surrounding areas! On March 22nd visit our booth at the Marine Institute for World Water Day. This annual event is free to the public! On April 21 join us in Portugal Cove-St. Phillips for their Earth Day Celebrations and on April 22nd join us at The Fluvarium  for another free Earth Day event! 
Winter 2018 Stewardship:
Gambo, Lewisporte, Grand Falls-Windsor, Centerville-Wareham-Trinity

We were inspired to get out and enjoy winter when we visited 4 SAM towns this February. First we were able to partner with the Town of Gambo's Recreation Department to put off a Winter Wetland Walk (listen to our CBC interview!).

Next we visited one of our new SAM members, the Town of Lewisporte as they work on some exciting stewardship initiatives with Ducks Unlimited and SAM.

Finally, we were lucky enough to attend Grand Falls-Windsor's Winterlude Celebrations AND CWTs Winter Carnival Hike In Black's Brook.
